I was torn between buying (used) an EF 70-200 L and a 70-300 L. The 70-200 could be used with an extender. The 70-300 could not. I reasoned that 200mm extended to 400 would be too much for me to hand-hold, involve carrying the extender around in case I wanted to use it. I'm glad I bought the 70-300.
Re: Extender EF 2x III Compatibility I think the problem is that the OP wants to shoot long (assumedly in excess of 300mm - 480mm FoV) and has an M-series camera and an EF kit lens. While it is possible to use an EF or EF-S lens with an M-series via the adapter, using them with an extender poses a whole new set of complications.

Canon has the RF 1.4x and RF 2x. I would guess that they are compatible with all L series telephoto lenses for the RF mount.

That totally sucks I was so hoping it would be compatible and able to push up to 2.8:1 with the teleconverter / extender, as I love using my 2x teleconverter with the EF 100mm f/2.8L is usm macro lens I've got atm to push up to 2:1 jNRT.
