Valve buried Half Life 2 VR years before either Alyx or Index were even conceived, before SteamVR. It was amazing to play on the Oculus dev kits and proved that regular games could work fantastic in VR, even without room scale support.
Rick Lane was very impressed with their Half-Life 2 VR Mod when he looked at it for his Reality Bites column at the end of last year, calling it "almost as much of a must-play as Alyx itself." You are basically playing on a monitor, except it is the size of a movie theater. I don’t know how this works but it actually feels like some things actually stick out of the screen (I can’t explain it but it’s shocking). The Valve Index speakers adds immersion on top of it. After watching Half Life: Alyx, I decided all of half life 2.

Take the Man Hacks for instance, in HLA, they are nasty. In HL2, you can one shot those suckers with the crowbar and let me tell you, it's sooooooo much easier to take them out with the crowbar when you can swing that thing like a sword in VR. In fact, depending on the enemy type, crowbars in HL2 VR make for a nasty weapon that lets you save ammo.

Enable the Beta Version of Half Life 2. Add "-vr" to the launch options. Go to Half life 2 settings and enable VR mode. It still works! WARNING: EXTREMELY NAUSEATING FOR SOME PEOPLE. If you can't recheck Direct mode after, Edit the steamvrsettings ini in your steam directory. Set it to Direct Mode: True.
